Across the nation and locally…People are taking time today to remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  This morning in Zanesville a special prayer breakfast was held to celebrate the life of the civil rights leader.

Martin Luther King, Jr. once had a dream that continues to inspire people today.  The community came together this morning at the 17th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund Prayer Breakfast to recognize both King’s legacy and local area students for their academic excellence.

"We are honoring and commemorating the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This is a person that no one in the United States should ever forget what he did for all of us, all races," said Co-Chair Carlotta Workman.

WHIZ’s news anchor Brittany Harris was the mistress of ceremony that also honored five local artists that have shared their expression with our area. Honoree Cassandra McDonald says King’s accomplishments show that one person can change the world.

"It is absolutely an amazing experience to be part of this legacy and to know that the dream lives on," said McDonald.

During today’s breakfast, 28 students from seven schools were honored for their achievements; achievements that they say were influenced by their family members along with Martin Luther King, Jr. himself.

"He’s an advocate for what he believed in and I think that says so much about him as a person. He fought for what he believed in and everyone thinks that’s great, but he truly embraced it and that’s just a phenomenal attribute of his," said Recipient Lauri Johnson.

"I am going to Muskingum University and entering the bachelors program for science and nursing," said Recipient Darion Green.

Workman says Reverend King’s determination is something that everyone should strive for.

"We tend to forget our past and when we forget our past, we make the mistakes of the past and we don’t grow. I think for these students to be reminded of Reverend King is a plus, because then as they grow up, they in turn, will remind their children, their families, of the importance of Reverend King and live by his principles," said Workman.
