The City of Zanesville’s Budget Committee met Wednesday to discuss the upcoming city budget and ways to help reduce costs.
5th Ward City Councilman David Tarbert said the city could do a better job of keeping track of expenses and forecasting revenue. Tarbert said the city needs a way to look at expenses on a monthly or quarterly basis.
"Why do we have to wait until December to find out what these departments are going to save? Why don’t we know at least quarterly? Why don’t we find out in April or why don’t we find out in July how these departments are doing," said Tarbert.
Tarbert said being able to look at monthly expenditures allows to better keep track of where money is actually going.
"It allows us to pinpoint problem areas. If we saw a certain department that was spending more than they were alloted to them, we would go to them and say why," said Tarbert.
City Council will meet Monday, February 14th to begin discussing the final city budget.
