Motorists in Danger

A local official urges motorists to stay off an area bridge.

In September a Dollar General semi was carrying a forty ton load over the Piper Road Bridge meant for 15-16 tons. The driver had become lost following his GPS unit. The bridge has been closed ever since, but that’s not stopping motorists.

"We put cables and barricades up. I don’t know who’s cutting them down and moving them out of the way but folks if you are traveling across the bridge you really shouldn’t be doing that," said Muskingum County Engineer Doug Davis.

Davis had hoped to repair the structure before winter but money for the project is pending, due to the truck company that is hired by Dollar General.

"It’s in the attorney’s hands. They would like to take a look at it. They want to hire an expert. I don’t have a problem with any of that. It’s just taking way too long," explained Davis.

The plan now is to begin work on the bridge after the weather breaks.
