Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz’s presents an estimate to move communications and offices to the Muskingum County East Complex.
The complex currently houses the Child Support Offices. Sheriff Lutz estimates the cost of moving the computer system, purchasing a new phone system and moving the radio room will cost around $142,000. A grant $42,000 could help fund some of the cost.
"I think we instantly become accessible. It’s still a great location for response times and I just think we get into a place where we’re just more accessible to the public," said Muskingum Sheriff Matt Lutz.
911 Operator Bo Keck is also looking into a second grant which could defray costs. Since the sheriff’s office just signed a year lease to stay in their current building. The commissioners are cautioning to wait and see if the grant pans out before moving.
"It doesn’t make much sense to pay at two different buildings," agreed Lutz. "So, it’s really not going to hurt us to wait six months to see what shapes out and if we are able to get this grant."
County Commissioners did inquire about moving the office and dispatch center in stages to the new location, Sheriff Lutz said it’s not an ideal choice because of the computer servers needed to maintain records.
