Molly Ritz set a State Semi-Final record by grabbing 16 rebounds but it still wasn’t enough to propel the Lady Bobcats into the State Finals. Behind a solid outing from Vanessa Smith, Hathaway Brown reached their fifth consecutive State Championship with a 53-36 win over Cambridge.
The Lady Cats got off to a slow start in the first quarter only scoring six points on one field goal, but they were able to use a strong defensive effort to stay close at the end of one. The Bobcats only trailed 10-6 after one and started to wake up at the end of the first half rattling off seven unanswered to pull it to 19-15 before the Blazers added a foul shot to make it 20-15 at the half. Cambridge shot 26 percent in the first half but still only trailed by five.
In the second half, the Blazers caught fire using a strong 8-2 run to start the second half to extend their lead to double digits and Cambridge could never recover. The Lady Bobcats shot just 27 percent from the field for the game and did not hit a three-point attempt in the game. Molly Ritz recorded a State Semi-Final record 16 rebounds to go with her game-high 12 points. Also in double figures for Cambridge was Abby Weatherell who added 10 points. Cambridge finishes the season at 22-5, but as a class the seniors have won a school record 78 games, back-to-back ECOL championships, and the schools’ first ever District and Regional Championships.
