Dead Fish Populate Canal

Residents of Zanesville shouldn’t be concerned about an abundance of dead fish in the canal along the Muskingum River.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Fish Management Supervisor of District 4 Tim Parrett said it’s normal.

Parrett explains that the fish called Gizzard Shads are fragile and usually die off due to winter’s harsh conditions. He says ODNR officials have checked the canal and there’s no sign of it being anything more than that and they’ve even seen Gizzard Shad deaths along the Ohio River as well.

He also said that the water in the canal was recently lowered due to the sewer line project taking place and that could have also caused the fish deaths.

He said the fish won’t be cleaned up and will be left for other animal to eat and decompose.
