Five area fire departments responded to a gas plant explosion that shut down part of State Route 821 between Caldwell and Belle Valley on Saturday.
According to Chief Rick Starr with the Caldwell Fire Department, emergency crews arrived on the scene around 9:30 a.m. to discover the pump-house building on fire. The plant is owned by Carper Wells Service Incorporated out of Reno, OH.
"It progressed, product kept coming out, we did shut the tanks off, the product continued to come out, continued to have a pretty good fire there, two tanks erupted," said Chief Starr.
During the explosion, one of the tanks was launched into the air and landed in a nearby facility. Chief Starr said due to the severity of the fire, mutual aid was needed to assist with water, foam, and man power.
"With the product coming into the tank, into the area the way that it was, it was virtually impossible to put it out by itself, so all we did was try to contain it," he said.
No injures were reported. ODNR and EPA were both called in to assess the scene. The Noble County Sheriff’s Office says S.R. 821 was reopened around 1:30 p.m.
The incident remains under investigation.
