A potentially deadly gas could be looming in your home and you may not even know it’s there, and one organization in Zanesville is raising awareness of what to do about it.

Rambo Memorial Health Center will hold a seminar next week on radon, the second leading leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. The seminar will feature representatives from the Ohio Department of Health as well as Doctor Carl Schowengerdt of Rambo. Those who attend the free seminar will receive a voucher for a free in-home test kit to test levels of the potentially deadly gas.

"In the 88 counties in Ohio when they conducted a test in 2009, 50 percent of the homes found that there was a high level of radon," said Peggy Orecchio, Rambo Memorial Health.

Orecchio says radon is pre-dominantly high in Ohio and says it comes up from the soil and rocks underneath your home as well as your water well.

"So when you receive this free kit, you can test your home, your results will be sent to the Ohio Department of Health and they would get back with you with the results from the test," said Orecchio

The seminar will be held at Rambo Memorial Health Center in downtown Zanesville on April 6th at 7 p.m. No registration is required.
