Local government officials are lending a helping hand to feed seniors in our area.
As a part of the national March for Meals campaign, the Muskingum County Commissioners along with Zanesville Mayor Butch Zwelling, assisted the Muskingum County Center for Seniors in passing out meals to the elderly on Wednesday. Executive Director Terry Dunn said the goal is to raise awareness about senior hunger.
"It brings attention to the fact that they recognize that it is an issue and they are willing to take time out of their busy day to come out and support our people plus support the people that we serve," said Dunn.
Dunn said 14 drivers traveled nearly 465 miles around Muskingum County to deliver meals. He said it’s important to help those in need, but it will be more difficult with their budget possibly being cut by 35%.
"We’re going in to the baby boomers, you know the first baby boomers just turned 65 last year and we have more and more demand and less and less funding," he said.
He said they are always accepting monetary donations. The Muskingum County Center for Seniors is the largest senior meal provider for the county.
