The Licking County Health Department has confirmed an OSU-Newark student has contracted bacterial meningitis.

Health Commissioner Joe Ebel says they are working with the University and the student’s family to notify those who may have been in close contact with the student.

Meningitis is an infection of the spinal cord fluid and the fluid that surrounds the brain.

Symptoms of the disease can include high fever, headache, stiff neck ,nausea and vomiting.

Health officials say the disease can spread through direct contact with the patient’s respiratory fluids through coughing or kissing.

A vaccine is available to prevent bacterial meningitis and you should contact your healthcare provider for more information.
