Statistics show that only 4% of the population donates blood on a regular basis and the Muskingum Valley Red Cross is hoping to change that.

A blood drive will be held this Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Secrest Auditorium in Zanesville. Central Ohio Red Cross supplies blood to more than 41 area hospitals and trauma centers. Representative Rick Dayton said they need is constant.

"Coming into the summer driving season, people are starting to get out more and accidents are occurring more so we need the blood," said Dayton.

He said those who are Type O negative are encouraged to donate because it can be given to any patient regardless of blood type.

"That’s what’s kept on hand at the hospitals for emergencies if someone comes in with an emergency and they don’t know what their blood type is or they don’t have time to type them," he said.

Those who donate will either receive a $10 gift card to Walmart or a one pound bag of coffee from Dunkin Donuts.
