Blood Drives Brings out Donors

Residents of Southeastern Ohio were waiting to give blood at Secrest Auditorium Friday.

A steady stream of blood donors made their way to the theater. The Central Ohio Red Cross Region that ran Friday’s drive is responsible for 27 counties and supplies 41 hospitals.

"Without that people can’t have surgeries," said Donor Blood Representative Rick Dayton. "People have problems if we don’t get blood. We can’t manufacture it. We have to get it from our fellow citizens."

In fact Dayton said only four percent of the population gives blood. One donor said that people shouldn’t be afraid.

"Don’t be scared," said Donor Troy Deaver. "There’s initial pain with the needle stick. They’re very cautious and it will only hurt for a second and that’s it."

The goal for the drive was 50 units of blood but Dayton said he expected to probably have 60-65 by the end of the day. Everyone who donated got a pound of coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts and a gift card to Wal-mart.
