Gas Prices Prompt Fuel Efficient Cars

Oil prices are at their highest levels in two and a half years and are helping to push gas prices up to $3.70 locally.

The high cost of gas is prompting some people to dump their bigger model V8 trucks and SUVs in an effort to save on the fuel costs. Experts say a good vehicle will get you 25, 30 or even 40 miles per gallon.

"A lot of things come in to that the aerodynamics of the car, the size of the car, the engines compared to a six cylinder," said Dutro New Car Sales Manager Dave Wallace.

Wallace said that the new more fuel efficient cars are still as stylish as the larger models and can still give the space needed for a family and look for the hybrid models to get a boost as well.

"I think you’re going to see hybrid’s come out stronger in the next few years as the technology develops and gas continues to rise. I think it’s not a passing fad," said Wallace.

He does say they’re seeing some interest in the hybrid option and that they are good cars for in town driving. Oil now tops $108 a barrel because of growing demand in China and continued instability in some oil producing countries.
