Keeping Your Child Safe

With the recent meningitis scare in Morgan County, a local doctor is reminding parents to make sure their kids are in good health.

Dr. Vicki Whitacre with the Zanesville-Muskingum Health Department said that while this form of Meningitis is rare, it’s still important to take precaution. She said toddlers are especially susceptible to various illnesses since they tend to put their hands in their mouth a lot.

"Parents just need to encourage their children from an early age to wash their hands frequently, toddlers will do that just like they’ll learn to brush their teeth," said Dr. Whitacre.

She said sanitizing your child’s toys can also help prevent germs from spreading. She said a healthy diet is also important.

"If your child is run down because they’re not sleeping properly or not getting the proper nutrition, they’re more susceptible to get ill."

The Centers for Disease Control recommends that various age groups receive the Meningitis Vaccine. For more information on the shot, you are encouraged to contact your family’s physician.
