Lots of Laughs for Area Children

After a long wait kids at the Durban Headstart get a treat just in time for spring.

The Metropolitan Housing Authority cut the ribbon and opened the gate on a new playground located on Durban Road in Coopermill Manor. The outdoor space was built with $5,000 from a grant funded by the American Association of Health and Recreation.

"We know that grants are few and far between and with the state of the economy the last few years it’s not easy to get that money," said Laura Wentworth administrator of Durban Headstart.

Only 372 sites nationwide were chosen for the grant dollars in hopes of creating spaces for children to get them active and cut down on childhood obesity.

"It’s very exciting. For weeks they’ve been waiting for it to be done," said Wentworth. "Every time that we walk past here they’ve been eyeballing everything here," said Wentworth.

Over 60 children are enrolled in the Durban Headstart program and will use the playground daily along with the other children in Coopermill Manor.
