Some local middle school students are being recognized for their academic achievements by skipping school.

6th, 7th, and 8th grade Grover Cleveland Middle School students were honored for maintaining a 3.0 GPA for the last nine weeks through the Gear-Up program by giving students a day off from school. Gear-Up Director Herb Perry says it’s important to recognize students hard work and achievements.

"The togetherness with their classmates, building their self esteem for being acknowledged getting a 3 point grade average or better," said Perry.

Perry says the Gear-Up program is made possible through a grant from the state and federal governments. He says this is the last year for the grant but will re-apply for it because of the good purpose it serves.

"Basically its to have these kids get ready and prepare themselves for secondary and post secondary education," said Perry.

In all , around 170 students packed the Fieldhouse Fitness center this morning and afternoon.
