Over 80 Possibly Dead Voters

by Nichole Hannahs on April 13, 2011

Ohio’s top elections official said it appears that thousands of voters considered active are anything but.

A report has found nearly 18,500 dead people on the state’s voter rolls. In Muskingum County there were 89 possibly deceased voters that appear on the list.

The Director of the Board of Elections said they’ll soon receive a list of names from the State Board of Elections and then have to cross reference the names on that list with names that appear on the State Health Board list of deceased residents.

"It’s possible that the names of deceased voters could have the same identity as an active voter," explained Hamill. "We have to compare the two and go from there."

Hamill said they do have a procedure they follow when a voter does pass away.

"We actually receive a list from the Ohio Department of Health and that list comes to us and then we remove them from the list."

The report issued by the state looked at voter data from March 2007 to March 2011. Secretary of State Jon Husted said it’s critical for the names to be purged to keep integrity from a cost, quality and confidence standpoint.
