It looks like the Gus Macker basketball tournament will not be played in Zanesville this summer. The Zanesville Lil’ Devils and the Muskingum County Fair Board announced today that they must relinquish the responsibility of hosting the annual event. In a statement released today the groups go on to say the late notification of the host availability as well as the lack of commitment from title sponsors led to this difficult decision. Zanesville High School football coach Chad Grandstaff says their group came up short on getting corporate sponsors and the event will not happen this year and may not happen next year. Grandstaff says he feels bad for the community and the youth who participated in the tournament. Earlier this year the Zanesville Downtown Association announced it would no longer organize the Gus Macker and handed it over to the Lil’ Devils and the Muskingum County Fair Board. On a related note — The City of Cambridge will be hosting a Gus Macker Tournament this summer on June 11th and 12th.
