Close to Home Mother’s Day Meal

Taking mom out for Mother’s Day this Sunday is as close as your local firehouse.

Since the 1970’s the Washington Township Fire Department has held their chicken barbeque. Rain or shine the firefighters will light up the fire pit in the wee hours of the morning in order to start cooking the chicken.

"We start cooking chickens at 4a.m. We call that the pit crew," joked Washington Township Fire Chief Gene Hanning. "They’re up there and doing their thing so that we’re ready to go so that everything is good and tender."

Thanks to generous donations the department has plates, utensils and other supplies ready to go in order to dish out the fixings for a great Mother’s Day Meal. Hanning said the community support is amazing.

"The chicken tastes good but if we didn’t have the community and the people supporting us why we could have all the chicken in the world," said Hanning. "If we didn’t have somebody to sell it to and support us. We always have great support."

Chief Hanning said they’ll set up some tents outside the Washington Township Firehouse for those waiting in line in case we see some rain showers roll through. The meals are also available for take out. The lunch is $8.00 a person and starts at 11 a.m. until they’re sold out.
