The pain at the pump could end up causing you a lot more pain than you bargained for. When the price is high, some people fill their tank and run — without paying.

The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous calls of drive off’s at area gas stations. Sheriff Matt Lutz says in the first four months of 2011, they have had 58 drive off’s compared to 63 last year during the same time.

"I can’t really explain why we have five less but I can say with gas prices up around 4 dollars a gallon, that it’s going to make people think about that," said Lutz.

Lutz says if you are caught driving off without paying, it’s considered a misdemeanor offense and you could have to cough up a 1,000 dollar fine and spend up to 6 months behinds bars.
