Some local students hit the trails of Zane Landing Park Friday morning to raise awareness of a potentially deadly illness.
Foxfire High School put on their 4th annual 1500 mile Diabetes Walk and Run relay. Foxfire School Nurse Linda Barker says the goal is not only increasing awareness of the disease, but how it can also be prevented.
"We do have a lot of students that it’s mandatory that they walk and we want them to get out and get healthy," said Barker.
With Friday’s temperatures hitting the low to mid 80’s, they were armed and ready with plenty of water for those who participated.
"We have a first aid station that they are ready to respond to any emergency and we have the water stations along the way and they can rest. There’s tents all along that they can rest at if they need to. It’s not about how fast you do it, it’s that you get out there and do it," said Barker.
All proceeds will go to Rambo Memorial Health to help with diabetes testing.
