The Muskingum River Advisory Council held a meeting on Monday at the Yacht Club in Zanesville.
Area Supervisor Cathy Janosko with Ohio DNR Division of Watercraft spoke about national safety boating week, which begins this Saturday. Events will be taking place throughout the state including vessel safety checks at ramps here in our area.
"Just to make sure all the equipment is in good working order and that it got back on the boat after winter storage so we just want to make sure that everyone is careful out on the water," said Janosko.
They see a number of issues out on the water with low head dams and strong currents. Occasionally, boats will go over the dams which can be extremely dangerous.
"It’s very hard to predict what the current will do and the effect it can have on the boat," she said. "It can either pull the boat up from the bottom of the dam or carry a boat over the top of the dam, so we encourage them to know where they are on the river and be very careful around those areas."
This Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon, officers will be inspecting boats to make sure they pass the vessel safety check at the Dillon ramps and at Riverside Park in Zanesville.
