Police Ask for Your Signature

The Fraternal Order of Police and Zanesville Mayor Howard Zwelling ask support from voters in repealing Senate Bill 5.

Mayor Zwelling said when he testified again the bill he spoke about his relationship negotiating with the fire and police unions and how they’ve always made concessions during difficult times.

"The fact of the matter is that I’m diametrically opposed to Senate Bill 5 and I think collective bargaining is something the legislature has no business in and there are built in safeguards to the system," said Mayor Zwelling.

Some of those safeguards include fact finding, mediation and arbitration. Zwelling said he’s signed the petition to put the referendum on the ballot this November. The local FOP said they’re honored to have the mayor’s support.

"We put on this uniform and we risk our lives daily not knowing what we’re going to run into while other are running out," said FOP President Tom Porter. "We feel taking away the collective bargaining aspect and numerous aspects of Senate Bill 5 is unfair."

If you’d like to sign the petition to get a referendum for SB 5 on the ballot you can do so Saturday at the Peace Officers Memorial Service taking place at 10 a.m.
