With Governor Kasich’s recent proposed budget cuts, many across Ohio are looking for ways to cut back, including the state auditor.
State Auditor Dave Yost is proposing the idea of merging some of Ohio’s 88 counties to help further save the state money. We spoke with Muskingum County Commissioner Brian Hill about the measure and he thinks it’s good the auditor is being proactive.
"I appreciate the opportunity where the auditor is allowing the counties, townships, cities, to decide whether or not a merger would be in the best interest of that entity," said Hill.
However, there are some downfalls including the potential to lose local government control for cities, townships and villages.
"If you were to try and combine counties, there would be some territories that definitely would cause some political issues for various people to decide whether or not it’s good for Muskingum County to merge with another county or not," said Hill.
The Auditor’s plan would give voters the right to petition the merging of two or more counties.
