Emergency Communication

Communication, a tool that becomes especially important in an emergency situations. So what happens when it fails?

The Muskingum Amateur Radio Association presented their annual field day at the Washington Township Fire Department. The 24-hour demonstration showcased their abilities to set-up communication when there virtually would be none….like in the recent deadly tornado that swept through Joplin Missouri.

"That town was just pummeled and devastated, and their were no communications for the first 48 to 72 hours," said Public Information Officer, Walter Kries. "We came in, we rode around with local officials and we were doing those types of communication for them until they could get their systems back on the air."

Kries said, it’s crucial to have a back up plan in case one system fails.

"You just never know where that need is going to be there," said Kries. "And like you say, it does save lives."

The demonstration truck set up behind the fire department, beginning at 2 o’clock Saturday and continued until 2 o’clock Sunday.
