AAA Gives Seniors Pointers, Tips for Driving Safely

AAA Auto Club gave some local senior citizens a lesson on car and driving safety Thursday afternoon.

Held at the Guernsey County Senior Center, AAA representatives performed a 12 point checklist on residents cars called "Car Fits" to make sure they are not only comfortable behind the wheel, but also safe.

"Make sure that they can see over the wheel, make sure that they can see in their mirrors, that they’re not ducking down, that they’re not too close to the wheel where the airbag can hurt them," said AAA’s Kimberley Schwind.

Among the items checked were seat belts, turn signals, the drivers ability to reach both pedals as well as seat and height adjustments.

"I think it’s a great idea. It doesn’t cost any money. It only takes 15-20 minutes to make sure that you’re driving a safe vehicle. So many of us seniors are not aware that there could be a problem, we just get in the car and go," said Participants Elizabeth and Jim Fleming
