State American Legion Baseball Tournament

Worthington 10, Coshocton Cherokees 9

(CO) Trent Lingo: 3B, 2 1Bs, 3 R, 3 RBI

(LANCASTER) — The Coshocton Post 65 Cherokees couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 2011 American Legion State Baseball tournament.  The end of their first game, though, they will gladly give back.

Coshocton, playing in its first state tourney since 1976, built a 7-0 lead against Worthington Post 239, but it didn’t last.  The District 12 champion scored five runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to pull out a 10-9 win.

The Cherokees drop to the losers bracket, where they will play tomorrow at 1 against either Circleville or Harrison.

Trent Lingo took a free pass in the first inning and made Worthington pay, sprinting his way across the plate on a Cameron Wolf double.

In the third, Post 65 struck again.  After a leadoff walk, Lingo nailed a triple to right centerfield, scoring Tyler Craigo.  A single from Nick Yoder allowed Lingo to ease across the plate.

Yoder went to second on a wild pitch, third after a Wolf single.  Michael Adams kept the inning alive with a double that brought Yoder in.  Wolf would score from third on a routine ground out a batter later.

In the fourth, Coshocton kept building its lead.  A Lingo single and Yoder double put two on for the Cherokees, when a wild pitch allowed Lingo to score.  A bases loaded walk later in the inning plated Yoder.

From there Worthington went to work, totaling five runs in bottom half of the eighth, two off a Sam Adams home run.

And despite Coshocton’s best efforts, namely, a Lingo two-out, two-run single in the ninth, Worthington stormed back, winning the game on a Daniel Eurich two-run home run.
