The Fourth of July weekend officially kicked off in Zanesville today.

The annual Starts and Stripes on the River event began setting up Sunday afternoon and came to life that evening. The day has been sponsored by the Zanesville Jaycees for about fifteen years and brings out about a thousand people to Zane’s Landing Park each year. Jaycee President, Shawn Antritt said, today’s band, carnival rides, and vendors are only the beginning of their weekend plans.

"Tomorrow the first band is going to start at 2:00, we’re going to be here all day," said Antritt. "The fireworks are going to start around 9:45 or 10 o’clock tomorrow night so we invite everybody out to have a good time."

The event costs about $20,000 to organize. Antritt said, with out the support of the community it wouldn’t be possible.

"Oh it’s going to be a relief when it’s all over," said Antritt. "Everybody works really hard at this event."

Most of the event’s proceeds will go towards scholarship funds and the Jaycee’s Christmas for Kids event in December. Sunday night the festivities will begin at 2:00. The day will include a speech from the mayor and singing of the National Anthem.
