Local Babe Ruth Baseball teams and the Muskingum Valley Old Timers Association are making history while celebrating 50 years of baseball.
This weekend the 13 year old Americans and 14 year old Nationals will represent Ohio at the Regional Tournaments in Illinois. Zanesville Babe Ruth Manager Rick Perone said this is the first time that a local 13 year old team has won its state championship.
"It was total excitement in Cambridge, for sure. We were all excited," said Perone. "A lot of people didn’t think we could do it, but I have a lot of confidence in this team. We have a great group of kids."
Perone said the winner of the Regional Tournament will represent seven states in the Babe Ruth World Series in August, but it’s more than just a game for these kids.
"They’re learning to be friends, teammates and comradery with other players," said Perone. "It’s a great experience for these kids to get to go out of town and see different environments and let people see who they really are."
The Muskingum Valley Old Timers Association runs the Babe Ruth program in the area and is funding travel expenses for the players and coaches.
