Port Hoping Drilling Pays Off

The Muskingum County Port Authority hopes a bang in natural gas energy will lead to big business in Muskingum County.

Board members are keeping their eyes on the east as drilling continues in Pennsylvania for the Marcellus Shale.

The boom the area is seeing could come close to Muskingum County when drilling begins for Utica Shale. And that could lead to companies looking for a place to locate base operations.

"We’ve got a great place for them to locate," said Executive Director Mike Jacoby. "We have a great concentration of services, supplies and logistics and work force. We’re trying to target that market."

Jacoby said in an attempt to market the area they spent over $11,000 for ads in a premier oil and gas trade magazine. They will hold a broker event for the job ready site at Eastpointe in the future.

"In the economy we’ve got we cannot just expect prospects to show up at our door," explained Jacoby. "We have to expend a little effort and money to market the property and the community itself."

Jacoby said they are also looking at selectively harvesting timber on land they own near the airport. He said that could generate nearly $50,000 for the port.
