Stay Out of the River

The hot weather has many looking for ways to cool down.

While the Muskingum River may look tempting Zanesville Firefighters are warning residents to stay away.

"You have unknowns like the currents, deep holes, debris whether man made or natural which are logs submerged you don’t see that can hit you and tangle you and take you down," said Zanesville Firefighter Pat Lafferty.

While firefighters get calls of a potential river rescue it takes at least eight people which completely empties two stations.

"We dispatch an engine company along with the rescue boat and if it’s near a bridge we put a spotter on the bridge to see if we can locate the person and if they do look like they are in danger we will launch boats to check on them," explained Lafferty.

Lafferty said a better option than swimming in the river is to visit one of the local State Parks or a swimming pool where a lifeguard is on duty. He said even running a hose or sprinkler in the yard is a great idea for staying cool.
