Veterans Serve Through Music

The celebration of Independence rang true for a number of Veterans on Sunday…in the form of music.

Sunday afternoon The Zanesville Memorial Concert Band took to the Secrest Auditorium stage to play a number of patriotic tunes. But for Band Members who have served, such as Veteran, David Shroder the day had a deeper meaning.

"What if we never had declared our independence from England?" expressed Shroder. "July 4th 1776 is a great day in out nation’s history and it should be because that’s the day we told King George that we wanted to do it ourselves."

Band Member and Veteran Fred Smith also believes by being a part of the concert band he is now serving his country in another way…to remind families what independence is all about.

"I think the fireworks and a lot of the patriotic music reminds people what it’s all about," said Smith. "So by having something like this where we play some patriotic music, people are reminded what the 4th is all about."

The 2011 Summer Concert Series will continue on July 24th at Zane’s Landing Park. Admission is free.
