The pets of an elderly couple may be the victims of a fire that consumed the home Wednesday morning.

New Lexington Fire Department arrived at 7741 State Route 37 East  around 9:45am and were met with a fully evolved structure fire. Witnesses said they attempted to make entry into the home before crews arrived but the back of the home was already in flames. They were attempting to rescue the couples two dogs which were believed to be inside. Firefighters also had trouble upon arrival.

"It was hard for us to make entry in this structure because the floors were particle board and when they got wet we had a couple guys put their foot, their knees through it so we kind of backed out and went into more of a defense mode," explained Assistant Fire Chief Larry Moore.

Moore said the fire started in the center of the structure but wasn’t sure what caused it to begin or if it was suspicious.

"The State Fire Marshal was luckily driving by and he was on the scene early and he was able to get some photos and he’s doing some of the preliminary investigation," said Moore.

New Lexington Fire Department was assisted on the scene by Junction City and Crooksville Fire Departments who brought water. One firefighter was injured when he fell and punctured his glove. He was not transported to the hospital.
