A rash of local church break-ins have authorities asking the community for help.

According to Sergeant Detective Ric Roush, Detectives with the Zanesville Police Department and Muskingum County Sheriffs Office are currently investigating nine Church Break-ins that have occurred since April… seven of which took place in July. Roush said breaking and entering numbers have been down overall this year with the exception of churches.

"Occasionally we’ve had church break-ins before but this is really the first time I can remember for quite sometime that we’ve had such a large number of churches broken into," explained Roush.

The break-ins are believed to be connected. Items stolen include small amounts of cash, electrical items, and small personal items. Entrances occur by damaging windows and doors, leaving behind broken glass. Roush suggests churches take precaution.

"The best thing they can do is to keep their churches as well lit as possible, parking lot areas, entrances, and exits," said Roush.

Anyone with information on the city break-ins is asked to contact the Zanesville Police Department at 740-455-0785 or their anonymous tip hotline at 740-455-0712.

Information on county break-ins is asked to call the Muskingum County Sheriffs Office at 740-452-3637.
