Ohio University-Zanesville announced a major milestone in their efforts to build a new recreation center Tuesday.
Thanks to many donors, partners, and community members, the Muskingum County Community Foundation has exceeded their goal of raising 5 million dollars towards the new facility, half of what it will cost. The campaign kicked off mid November of last year with a big jump start.
"We very early received the anonymous gift of a million dollars from a generous donor. That really set us on the right path I think," said Dr. Jim Fonseca, Ohio University-Zanesville Interim Executive Dean.
Next up for the facility will be the design phase which will be done by a Chicago based firm that specializes in aquatic recreational centers.
"The sketches are all very preliminary. Now we want to figure out exactly how many lanes the pools going to have, how many racquetball courts, where things are in relation to each other," said Fonseca.
The other 5 million dollars will be financed through the operations of the center. An open house will be held Wednesday, August 3rd from 4:30 to 6:30 p-m at Ohio University-Zanesville’s Campus Center for community input on the new rec center. Ground breaking is scheduled for early next year.
