Muskingum County officially has a new commissioner.
After two hours and three votes, the Republican Central Committee appointed Highland Township Trustee and Strauss Fencing Owner Steve Strauss who campaigned twice in previous elections for a commissioner seat.
"It certainly was a personal goal and I worked really hard at that and I stayed involved for many years and even after previous elections. Hard work pays off and it is gratifying I admit but it’s a great challenge. It’s a personal challenge and I really look forward to it," said Strauss.
Strauss plans to begin learning more about the County Home situation as well as the building department issues that have surfaced. But his first priority is managing the County’s budget.
"I’m just sure financially we’re going to have to prioritize how we spend money in Muskingum County probably more than we ever have and quite honestly, it might be one of the most difficult times to be a county commissioner," added Strauss.
It’s unclear when exactly Strauss will be sworn in for the commissioner seat.
Strauss replaces former Commissioner Brian Hill who resigned after becoming the State’s 94th District State Representative.
