More Americans are living in poverty, and people in Muskingum County are experiencing tough times.
New census data shows that just over 15% of Americans fell below the poverty line in 2010 – the highest rate in 18 years. 2-1-1 call center manager Audrey Foster said the service has answered more than 1,300 phone calls each month since June.
"People just need someone to talk to," said Foster. "We can help them through that whole thinking process of where to go and what to do next. They’re feeling a little bit overwhelmed."
Foster said the majority of the calls are about emergency food pantries and hot meal programs.
"They can call 2-1-1, and we’ll get them signed up to an emergency food pantry," said Foster. "We do all the information-gathering and get it ready for the food pantries."
