The 65th annual Millersport Sweet Corn Festival wrapped up Saturday. The celebration attracts between 200 and 300,000 people and is said to be "ear-resistable."
"Come and get your sweet corn," is the call that’ll bring hundreds of thousands to the one stoplight town of Millersport, Ohio.
"The children like to do it," said Volunteer Sylvia Strickland. "We’re all hard workers and they just watch the adults and they do the same."
Strickland has been volunteering at the Sweet Corn Festival for more than 20 years. She’s one of 70 from the Apostolic Christian Church of Mount Vernon who take part in the sweet-corn mission.
The process begins with the "Husker"-a machine able to cut and shuck more than 50 ears of corn per minute. Once the corn is shucked, it is brushed, tossed into a tub of water to be washed, boiled 3 minutes to perfection and finally….butter. The Sweet Corn Festival will use more than 350 gallons of butter.
Brad Zinker brought his family to the festival, between the group of three they ate a mere 7 ears of corn.
"It’s nicely soaked in butter, but it’s really tasty and I think if we get through this seven I’ll be pleased."
The amount is said to be comparable to the size of a corn kernel when put into perspective of the 60,000 ears sold so far…
The festival reflects the area’s agricultural background. All proceeds will go towards the more than 75 nonprofit organizations that took part.
