Coming from North Carolina, one woman’s story has made it’s way back home to Zanesville.

Karen Fawcett Kelly is a 1988 graduate of West Muskingum who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease nearly 2 years ago . Karen and her husband now live in North Carolina but that hasn’t kept past-time friends from banding together….The "Carin’ for Karen" Golf Outing Saturday at Vista Golf Course will help raise money to defeat the disease.

"Karen has been a dear friend of ours since elementary school," said Organizer Lori Crowley. "We all grew up together and it’s just important to help her out with this situation."

Karen is no longer able to use steps but can still walk some with the assistance of a walker. Saturday she found comfort in a wheel chair. Karen described Lou Gehrig’s Disease as expensive. The family has made several wheel-chair accessible modification to their home- which aren’t covered by insurance.

"I’d been hearing all the stuff going on but I really had no idea what I was in for," said Karen. "Getting here and seeing all these familiar faces in one place, it’s just, I don’t even have words to describe, its amazing."

Proceeds from the event will be used to help Karen’s family with medical expenses and a portion will go to the ALS Association to aid in research.
