Get Active, Get Healthy, Walk with a Doc

Following the success in August, walkers laced up their shoes again for the monthly "Walk with a Doc."

To encourage healthy physical activity Genesis Healthcare System invites the community to come break a sweat. The monthly sessions begin with a local doctor giving fitness tips and health advice. The Doctor will then lead a walk around the Goursuch Fitness Trail- behind Genesis Bethesda. Today’s Doctor of choice was Dan Scheereer.

Genesis Healthcare System’s Sharon Francis said, "Dr. Dan Scheerer spoke on wellness and reasons people choose not to walk and the importance of walking and establishing a home exercise program such as walking."

Wellness Practitioner Cathy Blair said the benefits of walking include a reduction in blood pressure, blood sugar and an increase in heart wellness. Participants of the walk are invited to walk about a mile with the doctor at their own pace, and are always encouraged to walk further with a friend.

"Walking is one thing that almost anyone can do," said Blair. "You can do it at your own pace, you can walk as long as you want or as short. It doesn’t require expensive equipment, a nice pair of shoes, so you can know there’s not a big financial investment. You can do it in any kind of weather. You can do it indoors or outdoors, so it’s kind of the event for everybody."

"Walk with a Doc" began in Columbus and has quickly spread to many cities across the United States and Canada. The walks will take place in Zanesville the second Saturday of each month, starting at 8:30 in the morning and lasting about an hour.
