Husband and Wife Find Success

The annual Backwoods Fest in Thornville wrapped up Sunday.

The 3-day art, craft, food and music festival attracts nearly 30,000 people each year, making it all the more difficult to believe it all began as a simple business idea between husband and wife.

"Well we found ourselves without a job and my husband started building crafts," said Owner and Operator Kathy Launder.  "We’re big into traveling to other shows, he kept coming home and saying, we got awesome land here we can do something."

Kathy Launder admits she had trouble envisioning her husbands idea….but 16 years later and with more than 300 vendors stretching across the 65 acre property it’s hard to argue the continued success.

"We’ll just have to play it by ear and see what happens," said Owner and Operator Gene Launder. "As tired as you are after three-days, a week would be scary."

When the Backwoods aren’t home to the festival, they offer wedding and other catering events. Visit,
