Library Thrives Despite Funding

Libraries across the state have taken a hit over the past two years because of a lack of funding.

The John McIntire Library is no different. They’re seeing funding levels similar to that of 1996. In the past two years library budgets have been cut 36 percent. Despite the lack of funding our local libraries continue to maintain due to a levy passed by voters two years ago.

"The decrease and changes we would have to make without the levy in the current funding environment would be even more significant," explained Library Assistant Director Blair Tom. "We would likely be looking at deeper reductions in hours, staffing and services."

Tom said the library now offers expanded free broadband access to public computers, have added laptops and downloadable formats. All while watching their checkbook.

"We’re very fortunate that our Board of Trustees and Director are very careful with the way we invest money in the library services and so we continue to be very conservative with our finances while still providing new services and formats as they become available.

Tom said the library will continue to evolve and adapt to new technology trying to stay a step ahead of what visitors may need.
