An active leader in the Zanesville community is being honored for his decades of service.
On Thursday William "Buzz" Benson received the 2011 Genesis Community Service Award at the Genesis Healthplex. Executive director of the Genesis HealthCare Foundation Paul McClelland said Benson has been involved with the Genesis HealthCare Foundation board of directors, Kiwanis International, Boy Scouts of America and many other organizations.
"It’s very inspiring to know that the people who are so committed to our community would dedicate so many years of sacrifice for the benefit of others," said McClelland. "It’s an honor to get to be around those folks and recognize them."
Benson and his wife have been married for 63 years, and he said Thursday night was an emotional time for both of them. He said one of his former bosses encouraged him to begin volunteering back in 1974.
"He said I want you to get involved in everything you can get involved in," said Benson. "That’s what direction I had right from the beginning, and that’s what I did."
The Genesis Community Service Award has been presented to an outstanding person in our area every year since 2000.
