A local state Democratic party leader made a stop in Zanesville Wednesday. Deputy Director of the Ohio Democratic Party and daughter of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown was the guest speaker as part of City Councilman Grant Hutcheson’s re-election campaign.
U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown’s daughter, Liz, spoke on the battle between Democrats and Republicans in this year’s election.
"We have also had some major grass roots victories in Ohio this year," said Brown. "Last week we turned in 318,000 signatures to stop a voters suppression bill that the Republicans passed in legislature earlier this year and we are seeing this ground swell of activism literally all across Ohio."
Also at the event — 20th District State Central Community Woman, Susan Mitchell talked about State Issue 2, the measure Democrats hope will repeal Senate Bill 5 .
"I feel people of privilege like Mr. Kasich and his family and his friends need to be thinking about why they are where they are," said Mitchell. "It’s because of firefighters, the teachers, the nurses and the police and all of us want to be able to call a police officer at the middle of the night, all of us want those same police officers, nurses and educators to get decent benefits, at least I do."
Republican Governor John Kasich pushed for Senate Bill 5 and says the new law – which limits collective bargaining for the state’s public employees — is vital for the survival of the state’s economy.
