Honoring Local Heroes

Citizens of three counties take a place of honor among those making positive contributions to our community.

The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the Red Cross honored 24 heroes in thirteen different categories during their annual breakfast. This year’s Muskingum County Hero is a foster mother to over fifty children. She encourages others to help children.

"You got to have a lot of love," said Jennifer Miller Muskingum County Hero. "You have to have an awful lot of patience and there are hard times. We’ve had ups and downs. It is very rewarding and people say I’m a hero, but I think the kids are heroes. I’ve had some kids that were very severely neglected and abused and they’ve overcome a lot."

One hero started her work as a young child after learning about children of third world countries without food or water.

"There’s no real satisfaction in your life unless you’re giving," said Faith Based Hero Betty Wiechert. "I mean you receive so much more."

"To see each and everyone of these heroes come up here and receive their reward and say that they aren’t worthy of it when in reality they are, it’s just amazing," said Wiechert.

The Red Cross said that fifty nominations were submitted for this year’s awards. Each recipient will be featured on a billboard in their county.
