They say art comes from the heart, and that’s certainly the case for Mary Wade, who is being recognized as December’s Artist of the Month.
Wade is a member of the Heart of Art Studio, which is an art program for people who attend Muskingum Starlight Industries, a sheltered workshop for adults with developmental disabilities. Artist Diana Geidenberger said it’s a place where both the art process and the art product are valued.
"I guess it’s just the one space at the workshop where it’s totally comfortable, and people are free to express themselves in whatever way they personally feel," said Geidenberger.
For almost a year, the Heart of Art Studio has participated in the Artists’ Colony First Friday Art Walks. Geidenberger said it’s the best way for them to reach out to the community.
"Not only do they surprise me every day with the things they come up with, but I think they surprise themselves too," said Geidenberger. It has given them an appreciation by other people that have seen the wonderful artwork that they do."
You can see all of Wade’s artwork as well as pieces by other Heart of Art members at this Friday’s art walk in downtown Zanesville from 5 to 8 PM.
