Port Authority Leasing Land to Farmers

The Muskingum County Port Authority is working on ways to generate revenue.

Executive Director Mike Jacoby said the Port Authority is experiencing a cash crunch right now.  He said leasing land at Eastpointe Park can help bring in some money.

"We’ve got about 204 acres that we would like to lease out in 2012 to farmers that are interested, so we’ll be doing some bidding for that, and there’s probably about 20 acres at the Airport Industrial Park that would be available for farming as well," said Jacoby.

Jacoby said the Port Authority is asking the Muskingum County Commissioners for financial assistance.  He said the Marcellus and Utica Shale projects will make a positive impact on the local economy.

"Drilling activity has really started northeast of us, primarily around Carroll County, which is just a little southeast of Canton," said Jacoby.  "It’s working this way – Guernsey County has seen a lot of drilling activity, a lot of leasing activity, and it’s working its way to Muskingum County."

Mayor-elect Jeff Tilton sat in on Wednesday’s meeting.
