In 1992 a wreath company from Maine was left with extra wreaths close to the holiday season. The company sent the 5,000 extra wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery where they were placed on the military headstones.
That one act of kindness has translated into a national movement called Wreaths Across America. At over 500 locations including Zanesville Memorial Park wreaths will be placed on the graves of veterans.
"Wreaths Across America stands for three things remember, honor, teach. Remember the veterans and what they have done for our freedoms, honoring their services to America and also teaching future generations about what made the United States great," said Brad McCune from Snouffer Funeral Home.
Wreath orders are being taken at Snouffer Funeral Home until November 21st. Each wreaths is $15. The grave decorations can be purchased by a family, individual, civic organizations or clubs.
"It’s really up to the individual as to whether they would like to put them on a loved ones grave or if they would like to place them on any veterans grave there in the cemetery," said McCune.
If your veteran isn’t buried at Memorial Park you can still purchase a wreath to put at your veteran’s gravesite. The Wreaths Across America ceremony will be held December 10 at Noon. If anyone is interested in helping place wreaths they should contact Snouffer Funeral Home at (740) 450-8000.
