Students Get a “GOOD” Message

Going on when the going gets tough is the message sent to students in the Zanesville City School System.

Ron Derry leads the G.O.O.D. program for fifth graders. G.O.O.D. stands for going on or defeated. Derry is a former educator who went blind eighteen years ago. He’s a living example of how to keep going.

"There’s a lot of children out there that don’t have hope that their future is bright and we want every child to believe that despite the problems they encompass in life they can overcome their adversity with a positive attitude," said Derry.

Wednesday’s presentation is sponsored by the Zanesville Lion’s Club. The Vice-President of the club said that since Derry is blind it allows him to connect with students.

"He can’t see like the rest of us can. I think he sees things in a different way," said Jeffrey Williamson. "I think that helps him communicate with the kids."

Each child in attendance was given a book mark with the going on motto and some children who represent good citizens, listeners, workers and have good attendance were given t-shirts. A new set o f children will be honored every nine weeks.
