The Zanesville Fire Department asks you to check your smoke detector when you change your clocks this weekend.
It’s hard not to notice the beeping sound of a smoke detector. But, that sound may fall silent if a home owner doesn’t check the batteries regularly. It’s recommended that the batteries get changed twice a year and the time change marks a friendly reminder.
"It’s a convenient time. It happens twice annually. If you can tie that into changing your batteries in a smoke detector you’ll be good to go when you need it," said Lt. Robert Long from the Zanesville Fire Department.
Other then changing batteries it’s important to check other items as well.
"Just make sure that it’s properly mounted in your home and that it’s free of any debris or cobwebs and that it’s not near any heating sources," explained Lt. Long.
Lt. Long also said having a detector in your home can provide the early warning needed to save your family in case of a fire. Smoke detectors can be picked up a the Zanesville Fire Department.
